Google's Android is one of the biggest Operating Systems for mobile devices. According to several reports, Android is used on the world's 80% smartphones. Google is taking good care maintenance job for Android as if they won't update their OS with newer features their
competition which is iOS by Apple will get ahead. Though, I would say Android is a lot more advanced. Using iPhone or an Android phone totally depends upon your preference. One year back, If you wanted a secure device with less malware I would have suggested you iOS but things have changed and Android is getting more secure with new updates.
Being a freeware, there are bundles of companies making Android mobiles and some doesn't maintain software updates if you have a Google Pixel device then you are good to go with.
